Frequently Asked Questions

Q
I work in an early years setting. I am concerned about the speech and language development of a child in my care. What should I do?
A
It is best to be open and honest with the child’s parents. Be clear about your concerns, perhaps with some examples written down to discus. Find out if the child is like this at home, or if the parents are worried too. Your SENCo or Area SENCo may be able to give you advice, to see if the child just needs time to settle in or mature. Most Speech and Language Therapy departments have an open referral system, which means that anyone can refer a child (with the parent’s consent). If your concerns continue, refer to the experts. You can find more information at www.talkingpoint.org.uk (from I CAN), or www.rcslt.org (from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).

Q
I am a parent. I am worried about my own child’s speech and language skills. What should I do?
A
Speak to your Health Visitor, nursery staff, or G.P. Some Speech and Language Therapy departments will pass you to a therapist to discuss your child’s progress and whether you should be worried. You can find their telephone number in the ‘phone book. You can find more information at www.talkingpoint.org.uk (from I CAN), or www.rcslt.org (from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).
