Nursery Rhymes and Songs

Songs and rhymes are an essential ingredient for early phonological awareness and the development of literacy skills. Knowledge about the sounds and rhythms of the words we use is a prerequisite for maturing speech sounds (phonology). And of course… it’s fun to join in!

The resources in this section provide excellent visual cues to help children focus on the words of the rhymes when you say them, and also to remember the rhyme themselves. Especially useful for those who are young or who struggle to maintain their attention.

Can they remember the words when they use the hand puppets themselves? Can they remember which rhyme goes with each one? Can they tell the song to their peers?

These puppets would be useful to focus a large group, (for example at the end of a stay and play session), or a small group, (children in a family group in an education setting, or in a Speech Therapy session). A song sheet is provided, so sets could be used in toy libraries, or for workers who want to encourage parent-child relationships in the home.
