HOW TO HELP VOCABULARY RANGE AND WORD LEARNING.
Young children learn words by hearing them used over and over again, in the correct context. They need the adults around them to talk to them! Some children struggle to develop their vocabulary range. These children need to hear the relevant words repeated even more often than usual. They need adults to talk even more than usual! Specifically, these children need the adults to use the vocabulary that is lacking, (for example, when the child is playing, name the items they are using).

Some of the products listed below can be used in free or directed play. When an adult plays alongside a child or discusses equipment available within a setting, the child will hear the names of the items. For more specific work, set up groups to work on a vocabulary theme. If you want more information on vocabulary development, we advise you to contact your local Speech and Language Therapy Department.
