Books

Books allow us to enter other worlds, to capture and keep events from our own world, to revisit and remember, and to fire the imagination. However, it’s a sad fact that many children with speech and language difficulties often have difficulty accessing story times. They just can’t sit and listen at group time, or the words are too complicated, or the story too long….

Here we have a collection of books that are designed to delight and entertain all children, with simple text and wonderfully descriptive illustrations. Many of the books here are versatile in their use – as a starting point for a story session, as a way to assess a child’s level of communication, for parents and professionals to use with specific children, or as flexible resources in a nursery or stay and play.

Remember, if children you know are struggling to cope with a whole book, just read as much as they want. You don’t have to stick to the printed words, you don’t have to start at the beginning. Repeating the same book over and over helps build vocabulary knowledge, anticipation, sequencing skills, memory, familiarity with vocabulary outside a child’s range of experience, knowledge of print and phonological awareness… the list goes on and on.
